# Bin and recovery

> Restore removed assets and understand when deletion becomes permanent.

The **Bin** appears beneath the workspace assets in the sidebar. It holds items moved there while the Bin feature is enabled. Recovery is available before permanent deletion.

## Restore an item

1. Open **Bin**.
2. Find the item and right-click it.
3. Choose **Restore**.
4. If the original name is in use or the original folder is unavailable, choose another name or destination in **Restore as or to another folder**.
5. Open the restored item and check its dependent workflows.

Restoring does not overwrite an active item. If you restore a dataset under a different name, pipeline SQL and other name-based references are not automatically rewritten. Update and verify those references separately.

## Retention

The organisation's **Bin retention** setting controls when removed items become eligible for permanent deletion. Members with permission to manage organisation settings can change it. The setting can also keep items until they are explicitly permanently deleted.

Check the date or time remaining shown for the item. Do not assume every organisation uses the same retention period.

Shortening retention can affect items already in the Bin, using their original deletion time. Review the impact shown in the confirmation before applying a shorter period.

## Delete permanently

Right-click an item and choose **Delete permanently**, or use **Empty Bin** for the available Bin contents. Review the confirmation and the affected assets before proceeding.

<Warning>
  Permanent deletion cannot be undone through the Bin. Restore anything you need to keep before permanently deleting items or shortening retention.
</Warning>

## Troubleshooting recovery

| Situation                       | What to do                                                                                                                        |
| ------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Original name already exists | Restore under a different name or choose another destination. |
| Original folder is unavailable | Select an accessible destination in the restore dialog. |
| Restored dataset has a new name | Update SQL and other references that use the old name. |
| Restore action is unavailable | Check your permissions and the item's state with an administrator. |
| Item is not in the Bin | Check the organisation and workspace, then establish whether it was permanently deleted or removed through a different operation. |

See [workspace cleanup](/workspace/cleanup) for the checks to make before moving assets to the Bin.
